PROJECT: The house at Faldingworth is an accessible residential new-build

STATUS:  Completed 2019

The dwelling sits within a large plot with a paved driveway, landscaped frontage and a large landscaped garden to the rear.

As part of the brief, the house also includes quarters for a carer as well as the client and their family.

The driveway features an extension of the roof which allows the client to exit and enter vehicles under cover from the rain etc.

The house also includes: a specialised kitchen and bathroom, physiotherapy room, ground source heat pump and accessible landscaping throughout the garden.

The house and grounds are completely accessible by wheelchair with level pathways throughout and level-access at thresholds.

The living room features sliding pocket doors, a square-plan and movable furniture which allows easy access for wheelchair users.

The house also includes: a specialised kitchen and bathroom, physiotherapy room, ground source heat pump and accessible landscaping throughout the garden.

All communal spaces have been made accessible by wheelchair as seen in the width of passages (above). The hallway also features in-built bench storage to avoid obstruction of pathways.

The physiotherapy room features a free-plan and overhead racking for storage and the use of banded equipment from above.

Internal finishes and detailing have been considered to avoid purely utilitarian accessible spaces. Instead any adaptations for a disabled user have been integrated subtly to create a more domestic environment.

The specialized bedroom features a H-track hoist, side-folding bed and a door and a half access directly through to specialized bathroom, with room for the hoist track notched out of the door frame.

The specialized bathroom features a hydrotherapy bath, shower with movable chair, accessible toilet, anti-slip flooring and stippolyte glazing for privacy.
